A loyalty card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet: the guide for a business

A loyalty card in the digital wallet is how you bring customers back without asking them to download an app. Here is how it works in practice, what the business needs, and how it differs from an app and from a paper card.

What is a loyalty card in the digital wallet?

It is a card belonging to the business, stored in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, in the same place the customer already keeps credit cards and boarding passes. It shows the business name, the customer's balance and the barcode that identifies them at the counter, and it updates itself after every purchase.

Does the customer need to download an app?

No. The wallet is already installed on every iPhone and every Android device. The customer scans a QR code or taps a link, approves adding it to the wallet, and that is it. There is no app signup, no password, and no install screen to abandon halfway.

How long does it take a customer to add the card?

Five seconds at the counter. That is the bar the product was built around: anything done in front of the customer has to beat digging a cardboard card out of a wallet, or the staff will stop offering it.

What happens to the card after the customer buys?

The card in the wallet updates itself: the stamp is added or the balance grows, without the customer opening anything. Alongside that you can send a notification that lands straight on the lock screen, carrying the business logo, with no app and no SMS charges.

Does it work on Android too?

Yes. The same club issues a card to Apple Wallet on iPhone and to Google Wallet on Android. The customer picks no format and never learns there is a difference, and the business runs one club.

What is the difference between a wallet card and the business having an app?

An app asks the customer to download, to sign up and to approve notifications, and most customers drop out at one of those steps. A wallet card skips all three: the wallet is already installed, its notifications are already approved, and the card sits where the customer opens anyway at the till. A small business also maintains no versions and passes no app store review.

What happens if the customer deletes the card or changes phone?

They go back in through the existing members link and get the same card with the same balance. Nothing is lost, because the balance lives in the system and not on the device.

What does the business need in order to start?

A browser. Card design, setup and training cost nothing, and staff scan from any computer or phone with no dedicated equipment. An NFC tag on the counter is a convenience, not a requirement.
